THE VISION

THE IDEA FOR THE CORK FOOD HUB WAS CONCEIVED BY THE CORK FOOD POLICY COUNCIL IN EARLY 2022. THE COUNCIL'S MAIN PURPOSE IS TO DRIVE INITIATIVES THAT SEEK TO IMPROVE THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM AND CREATE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO QUALITY FOOD FOR THE PEOPLE OF CORK CITY.

THE QUESTIONS WERE POSED AS TO WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR CORK TO BECOME BY IN LARGE FOOD INDEPENDENT AND WHAT WERE THE MAIN BARRIERS TO THIS BECOMING A REALITY. ACCESS TO LAND, SKILLED LABOUR AND A MARKET WERE SEEN AS KEY ISSUES.

A VISION EMERGED OF AN ORGANISATION WHICH WOULD GIVE NEW ENTRANT ORGANIC FARMERS ACCESS TO LAND, INFRASTRUTURE, FACILITIES AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. THIS ORGANISATION WOULD BE LOCATED CLOSE TO CORK CITY AND WOULD AIM NOT ONLY TO IMPROVE LOCAL ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCTION BUT TO DO SO IN SUCH AS WAY WHICH WOULD NOURISH NATURE, BOOST BIODIVERSITY AND ENGAGE WITH COMMUNITIES.
